 Evening commute.Shortly after sunset, like clockwork, hundreds of loras (local name for these parrots) would fly from town, past us and up to the hills to roost for the night.. .There was no hope to capture them with ambient light, so I thought to try to use a flash. I suspected this approach would be a challenge - lock on focus on birds flying towards me, pan the camera quickly in near darkness, and then hope to get a group of them crossing right in front of me? It was. This image was one of my early attempts. You always assume you can get a better capture if you keep trying. Well, after many night of trying, I realized that luck shined early. I guess I should have just quit while I was ahead.. .The loras are near threatened (IUCN) but the sustained and significant conservation efforts on Bonaire seems to have increased their numbers.  The tremolo..An early morning capture of a parent loon on a perfectly still and quiet pond. Except the loon was doing its tremolo call probably because he wasn't happy by my presence. Their chick had hatched just recently and these parents were very skittish. I was far away, on my motionless kayak tucked up against the shore, and the mom and chick were clearly safe (on the other side of the island, behind this parent, and not even visible). Nevertheless, I was being "yelled at". (Same loon family as my recent loon posts.). .Although you can tell the loon is making a sound, I wish the tremolo call could be part of the viewing experience. If you are curious, this site has various loon calls, including the tremolo, click here . Among birds in North America, the loon must have one of the most interesting repertoire of vocalizations.. .The red halo of a reflection around the loon comes from the roof of a small cabin on the other side of the pond.  Common murre.As mentioned in the previous post, the fog was super thick at the St Mary's Ecological Reserve in Newfoundland the day we visited. This common murre (Uria aalge) kindly landed 3m from the viewing area, allowing a clean close up portrait.. .At the time I thought the murres were black on white. The image reveals their head color to be more brown-black. This is their breeding plumage.. .I don't recall what was in the background to create that bluish-grey color.
